Handmade end-grain butchers block chopping boards in a brick and mortar pattern. These extra thick boards are made of a "world tour" of exotic hard woods - British Oak, American Maple and Cherry, Indian Padauk, and African Wenge, Zebrano, and Kiaat. The bricks are encased by a "mortar" of end-grain American black Walnut. Four small feet are supplied in the box if you have an especially slippery worktop such as polished marble (although I prefer the look without the feet attached). The board is finished in a food safe mineral oil bath for 48 hours, then coated with a food safe water repellent bees wax for long lasting protection.
1 - (L)41cm x (W)23cm x (H)4.5cm - Extra large
2 - (L)41cm x (W)23cm x (H)4.5cm - Extra large
3 - (L)41cm x (W)23cm x (H)4.0cm - Marginally thinner, giving a lighter feel and a more sleek look (I actually prefer this thickness myself)
End-grain wood is universally prized for many reasons, not least because of its good looks. A reason they are not prized, however, is because end-grain can be relatively tricky to work with, with different properties across different species complicating a build. If you persevere it becomes obvious why the extra labour is worth it though, as you are left with beautiful cross sections and deep rich colours that you simply can't find in face-grain or edge-grain pieces. These boards show off the beautiful grain patterns of each species of wood, laying them out in an intricate and intriguing brickwork design. To compliment the complexity of the multi-species design I opted for a simple edge round-over to allow the wood to speak for itself without any additional frills (handholds, juice grooves, etc). Happily at home in a country kitchen and a fitting addition to any home, this board would stand out no matter the worktop. Part of my mission with Old Lion Studios is to make furniture that stands the test of time, and the self healing end-grain paired with my high quality bees wax finish will do just that - these chopping boards will stand up to even the busiest kitchens. Be it a house warming gift or simply an addition to an established home, I'm confident you will be very happy with this chopping board.
End-grain, edge-grain... What does all that mean?
Imagine a rectangular board of wood. The large flat sides are called the "face-grains", the long sides are the "edge-grain", and the very ends are "end-grains". Without bogging you down in technical talk, they essentially refer to the orientation of the wood fibers (or "grain"), as different orientations give the wood different properties. End-grain boards - boards whose cutting face is made of end-grains facing up towards you - are known to be "self healing", meaning they show slightly less knife marks over time. Edge-grain boards show slightly more knife marks over time, but require much less maintenance as the wood grains aren't exposed (meaning you can oil the board far less frequently). While there are pros and cons of all types, this board in particular is end-grain to show off the variety of grains found in different species of wood. I think it makes for a beautiful board and I hope you will too.
Packaging:
I ship my products in high-security dent resistant packaging, so your purchase should reach you looking fresh from the workshop. All my packaging is either made of 100% recycled material, or is 100% recyclable (or both!).
Aftercare:
Wooden boards need some TLC compared to plastic chopping boards, however with the right care they can last for decades and are much nicer to look at! After use wash gently with warm soapy water and towel dry. Never place the board in the dishwasher, and never leave the board soaking in water for an extended period of time - both of these actions can result in the removal of the protective finishes. This allows water to reach the raw wood, potentially causing staining, warping, and even splitting. Also, make sure to avoid the board getting in contact with high heat (such as the bottom of a hot pan) as this can cause scorch marks. I highly recommend applying a board oil at least once every 6months on an end-grain board, to maintain a high level of protection - it's as easy as rubbing it all over the board, waiting 20 minutes, then rubbing off the excess with a dry cloth. Simple!
Shipping:
Items are sent via Royal Mail first class post or equivalent carrier. Currently I do not ship internationally and only fulfill orders to mainland UK, this may change if there is particular interest.
